This past week, a Hennepin Housing Court Referee ordered a Minneapolis landlord to return over $27,000.00 of rent to six tenants due to persistent and unaddressed pest infestation issues in their building. The Star Tribune article can be found here.
When something positive like this happens, there is a lot of credit to go around. The Minneapolis law firm of Faegre Baker Daniels put in a ton of time and work (much, if not all, of it pro bono) in order to obtain this result. The organization Inquilinxs Unidxs por Justicia did a fine job in organizing and assisting the aggrieved tenants. But more than anything, the six tenants themselves deserve a tremendous amount of credit. Standing up to your landlord is a difficult and daunting task. What they did took a great deal of courage, and in doing so, hopefully they'll inspire groups of tenants in similar situations to stand up for their rights to clean and safe housing.
